Company Overview

Battelle manages and operates the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) program, which is solely funded by the National Science Foundation.

A 30+ year project dedicated to understanding how changes in climate, land use and invasive species impact ecology, the observatory’s scientists and engineers are collecting a comprehensive range of ecological data on a continental scale across 20 eco-climatic domains representing US ecosystems.

Our teams use cutting-edge technology, including an airborne observation platform that captures images of regional landscapes and vegetation; mobile, relocatable, and fixed data collection sites with automated ground sensors to monitor soil and atmosphere; and trained field crews who observe and sample populations of diverse organisms and collect soil and water data.

Once structures are completed, a leading-edge cyberinfrastructure will calibrate, store and publish this information.

The Observatory includes more than 500+ personnel and is the first of its kind designed to detect and enable forecasting of ecological change at continental scales.

We are currently seeking an Environmental Scientist, Remote Sensing.

The preferred location for this position is Boulder, CO.


The Environmental Remote Sensing Scientist will be part of the NEON Science Team that is responsible for operating, maintaining, and ensuring the success of a national program to generate > 180 data products from 81 sites throughout the US for over 30 years.

The Science Team develops, maintains, and improves field and lab protocols, derives data processing and data QAQC algorithms, develops and maintains data analysis pipelines, works with external analytical laboratory partners, and collaborates with NEON Cyberinfrastructure software engineers to produce and publish high quality data products for the research, education, and decision-making communities.

As a member of the Science Team, the incumbent will primarily be responsible for remote sensing data product development, visualization of remote sensing data products, processing of annually collected remote sensing data, data product QA/QC and community outreach.

The incumbent will apply skills in predictive data modelling with remote sensing data sets, including statistical, machine learning, computer vision or deep learning approaches, to contribute to an open-source, Python code base used to generate high quality data products available for public use.

Algorithm development will focus on implementing innovative methods to integrate point scale field observations with airborne remote sensing datasets to model ecosystem parameters and uncertainties across regional and continental scales.

The successful candidate will also pursue collaborations with scientists and data users, both internally and externally to support algorithm development, quality improvements, and use of NEON data and infrastructure.


Lead theoretical and practical implementation of algorithms for predictive modelling of ecosystem parameters and generating associated mapped data products and their uncertainty through fusion of field measurements and high-resolution remote sensing datasets captured by NEON’s AOP.

Transition scientific algorithms to an operational status to allow efficient production of data products for large annual remote sensing data collections as well as efficiently process a vast archive of historical remote sensing data.

Collaborate with other Battelle scientists and with the scientific community at large to prioritize functionality and utility of NEON’s AOP data products, including efforts to increase discoverability, accessibility, and interoperability with other publicly available datasets

Lead and contribute to proposals and research projects involving remote sensing data products.

Develop automated processes for quality control and quality analysis of data products and automatically flag potentially erroneous results.

Coordinate and lead regular meetings with the external Technical Working Groups on remote sensing algorithm development and data quality

Execute routine processing to generate a suite of remote sensing data products.

Contribute to the QA/QC of airborne remote sensing datasets throughout annual flight campaigns

Provide technical support and guidance to NEON data users.

Contribute to other project deliverables as needed.


Bachelor’s degree in remote sensing, geospatial science, ecology, environmental science, or a related field with 2 years of experience or master’s degree or PhD.

Experience with machine learning, artificial intelligence, or computer vision algorithms.

Strong working knowledge of Python, R, IDL, C or Matlab scripting

Experience working with and manipulating large hyperspectral or lidar remote sensing data sets.

Familiarity with remote sensing software packages such as ENVI or ArcGIS / QGIS

Self-motivated with a strong attention to detail and accuracy, and eager to work collaboratively within and across NEON project teams.

Demonstrated skills in management and analysis of large, multivariate datasets.

Ability to speak in public to a diversity of audiences including scientists, science educators, college/university faculty, college-level students, and funding agency (NSF) program directors.

Strong problem solving and analytical skills.

Proven ability to write and edit scientific literature or content for public delivery.

Salary: $85,700 – $90,000 a year

This information reflects the anticipated base salary range for this position based on current national data.

Minimums and maximums may vary based on location.

Individual pay is based on skills, experience and other relevant factors.
